This is the new EU-funded uber camera capable of catching Britain’s law-breaking motorists – for MULTIPLE offences. The trailer-mounted unit, currently being tested in Finland, can measure a vehicle’s speed, whether the driver’s wearing a seatbelt and the distance between cars – enabling police to charge motorists with tailgating. It can also read the registration plate, calculate traffic emissions and recognise the road conditions. The test equipment is part of an EU project aimed at improving traffic safety and reducing accidents caused by traffic violations. With a set of complex cameras, the ‘Big Brother’ style setup takes various pictures before filing details back to a central database via a GPS system. The equipment automatically destroys images over one-month old and those in which no traffic violation is evident. See swns story SWCAMERA. 2 Nov 2010.
